Prestige Philately Pty Ltd is the successor in title to three other auction firms that have a history dating back to the late 1970s.
Gary Watson conducted auctions under his own name between 1982 and 1990. Macray Stamp Sales was founded by Ray Kelly, the Australasian agent for Robson Lowe Ltd (later Christies Robson Lowe, now merged with Spink & Sons). That business was purchased by Ian Kitchin in 1988. Ian Kitchin subsequently acquired Gary Watson’s firm to form Macray Watson Auctions.
Premier Postmark Auctions was formed by David Wood in 1991 and quickly established a position of pre-eminence in the field of postal markings.
Between 1990 and 1998 Gary Watson was retained as expert consultant to both Macray Watson Auctions and Premier Postmark Auctions.
Premier Philately was formed in July 1998. The shareholders and directors were David Wood and Gary Watson.
In September 1999, Premier Philately acquired the business of Macray Watson Auctions.
In May 2002, Gary Watson acquired David Wood’s interest in Premier Philately and is now the sole owner of the company.
